Description

The Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program brings young English professors from around the world to U.S. colleges and universities for nine months to study, teach/assist in language instruction and serve as cultural ambassadors on campus. The program mission is to strengthen foreign language instruction on U.S. campuses through the presence of native speakers, and to reinforce the English skills of foreign language teachers through an intensive cross-cultural experience.

Fulbright Colombia is pleased to offer for the first time 4 FLTA awards for the 2010-2011 academic year in the United States. Colombian university English professors between the ages of 21 and 29 will have the opportunity to teach introductory or intermediate courses in Spanish, and assist Spanish departments in developing language acquisition strategies. It is also expected that the FLTA’s will contribute to student life on campus through developing cultural and extracurricular activities such as cultural presentations, community outreach projects, and working with U.S. students in non-traditional settings such as serving as directors of language houses or hosting language tables during meals. FLTA fellows can work up to 20 hours per week.

The FLTA’s are also required to enroll in at least two university courses per semester, one of which must be in U.S. Studies. Courses can be taken at the graduate or undergraduate level, and can be taken on an audit or credit basis.
